Biography

Born in Washington, D.C., Matthew Rubenstein studied piano at the Manhattan School of Music in New York and the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign. Among his teachers were Jerome Lowenthal, Ian Hobson, Daisy de Luca (São Paulo), Constance Keene, Edward Aldwell, Charles Timbrell and William Heiles (harpsichord). He has performed as soloist, chamber musician and accompanist on four continents and garnered prizes in several international competitions. In 1999 he received a Fulbright grant to pursue doctoral studies in Berlin, where he now lives. A performer with a wide repertoire, extending from the Baroque to the present, he has consistently championed the music of neglected twentieth-century composers. Matthew Rubenstein recorded the first complete CD of the piano music of Aribert Reimann (cpo 2007), followed by “Berlin im Licht”, a portrait of the composers who were active in the Berlin-based Novembergruppe during the Weimar Republic (Berlin Classics, 2011). He has also recorded two solo CDs of previously unrecorded piano music for Toccata Classics: the solo piano works of Heinz Tiessen (2015) and the first album dedicated to the works of Marcel Mihalovici (2020). Matt Rubenstein is currently preparing recordings of the music of Gabriel Fauré and his pupils as well as the first album of the keyboard works of Johann Adam Reincken on the modern piano.
